Setting aside God’s commandments puts one in a spiritual exile, the bishops said in their pastoral letter for lent, being read in churches in Malta and Gozo between today and tomorrow.

Mgr Paul Cremona and Mgr Mario Grech said: “The exile embodies all that which draws us away from God.

“Everybody experiences exile in a  personal way, but we can offer some examples: When we are under the impression that whatever we decide is right or wrong without considering our decision it in the light of the Word of God; when we feel that in our life we have no need for Jesus or the Church which he bequeathed to us, except in times of emergency (illness, death, problems); when we become totally consumed by materialism to such an extent that we ignore ethical principles and measures of  justice.”

The bishops said that the culmination of Lent is the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus.  These events had to be reflected upon in the next 40 days through prayer by pondering upon their relevance in one’s life.

Even Jesus experienced an inner ‘exile’ on the Cross: as a human, he was separated from God the Father. at the point of death, he prayed hard to return to his Father now that his mission had been accomplished.

Mgr Cremona and Mgr Grech said:

“God created us for eternity, and the Christian should aspire to enjoy God in all eternity.  Unfortunately, we no longer speak very much about this, however it is fundamental for our spiritual journey.  if we acknowledge that we are in exile, we will not be very much attached to things of the world; rather we will focus upon those things which lead us to eternal life.”

In times of exile, the chosen people became conscious of the fact that instead of enjoying freedom, being distance from God and his commandments, they were enslaved by their own passions and desires and by those of others.

“In our contemporary world, there are many people who feel this way. They think that if they push God aside they will be freer to pursue their own inclinations.  In fact, they realize that this is not the case.  Often in such a miserable state, they wake up to the fact that they need God and they turn to him once again. 

“Lent is the time when we choose to focus on the Kingdom promised to us by Jesus. During Lent, we should centre our thoughts on the Paschal Mystery – the Death and Resurrection of Jesus.

“Lent becomes more meaningful if we choose a path that leads us out of our exile: more time spent in prayer; restraint from purely material things (this includes fasting from anything which tends towards materialism); reading the Word of God which illustrates the way to the promised land; the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) which helps us to discern better what is right and what is wrong in our lives; closer communion with the Sacrament of the Eucharist.  all these are indicative of the fact that the person is not only trying to renounce his exile but it is also a sign that he is initiating his journey along a path that will lead him to ponder more deeply the mystery of living as a Christian.”

A near-capacity crowd turned out to see Della Reese’s long-awaited — and vastly overdue — return to the Bay Area stage on Thursday.

It had been some 25 years since the multitalented entertainer last performed in San Francisco and she’d quickly make up for lost time during the opening show of this three-night stand, which runs through Saturday at the lovely Rrazz Room.

The octogenarian, who first came to prominence as a gospel singer in the early ’50s and would later achieve great success as a TV star, used the occasion to debut her brand new project — a music-infused memoir dubbed “My Life in Song.”

The show delivers exactly what’s promised, taking fans on a chronological journey from Reese’s earliest memories to present day. she touches upon more than a dozen musical numbers, each representing a particular period of her life, and includes at least that many intriguing personal anecdotes.

Although decades past her commercial prime as a recording artist, Reese proved at the Rrazz that she’s still a powerful vocalist and can handle an amazing array of material, from gospel to jazz to pop. Yet, she might be an even better storyteller.

Reese has a great knack for detail, even when she’s relaying events that occurred some 70 years ago, and easily juggles humorous asides with heartfelt memories. she did, however, have some difficulty striking a proper balance between the stories and the songs — and long stretches would go by without any music whatsoever. Improving that mix, which really just boils down to tweaking the pace, should be Reese’s top priority for this new show.

As it currently stands, “My Life in Song” serves as a multifaceted reminder as to why Reese is such a significant figure in the entertainment world. you learn about the many milestone moments through the stories, with punctuation (usually, an exclamation point) provided by the accompanying song.

She spoke of all she learned from her early apprenticeship with gospel great Mahalia Jackson, and how that factored into the start of her own seminal gospel group, the Meditation Singers. Reese paired that discussion with a sweet rendition of the hymn “His Eye is On the Sparrow,” which was the first song she ever performed with Jackson.

The next chapter dealt with her days as a jazz and blues singer, paying particular attention to her sizable crush on Nat King Cole and featuring a jumping take on the standard “Still Called the Blues.” Reese went on to talk about a near-death experience, then subbed her own lyrics — addressing the close call — into Simon & Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water.”

Of course, she also brought up her time on the TV hit “Touched by an Angel,” an inspirational series ran nine seasons (1994-2003) on CBS. Reese’s version on the theme song, “Walk with you,” seemed to awaken some happy memories in the crowd.

Immediately following her performance, Reese was presented with a pair of official proclamations made in her honor — one of which came from the desk of Oakland Mayor Jean Quan. that brought Reese’s stack of proclamations up to 10 for the week — a new record for an artist performing at the Rrazz.

Let’s hope all this love and admiration inspires Reese to return to the Bay Area stage in the near future.

PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. — a baseball legend and local community leader has died. Gary Carter gone at the age of 57. Tonight the local campus where Carter coached is remembering the legend.

“Gary is a phenominal person. We celebrate his life,” said Palm Beach Atlantic President bill Fleming.

Former teammates say Gary Carter was everything you wanted in a sports hero, a great talent, a great competitor, a great family man and a great friend. Carter died today at 57, just nine months after being diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor.

Carter was a Hall of Fame catcher, spending most of his 19 major league seasons with the Montreal Expos and new York Mets.

He lived in Palm Beach Gardens and had just completed his second season as head coach at Palm Beach Atlantic University when the brain tumor was discovered last may. PBAU President bill Fleming says the campus is mourning tonight.

“Whenever you lose a friend as dear as Gary Carter, you have a hole, a gap in your life.”

Despite the upsetting news, his former players practiced tonight. They said a prayer and vowed to carry on. It’s what Coach Carter would have wanted.

“They took to the field and practiced in his honor.”

He retired from professional baseball in 1992. To the world he was a legend. To Palm Beach Atlantic University he was a friend. To his grieving family, he was devoted.

His daughter coaches softball at the school and his son-in-law works in sports administration. 

Gary never went on to coach professional baseball because he became a grandfather, and to him that was more important.

“He decided he would stay at home and not wander the world with major league baseball,” said President Fleming.

Funeral plans for Carter have not been announced.

A link is currently being tested to connect two University of Massachusetts internet tools used widely on campus.

SPARK, the learning management system used for on-campus courses and OWL, the online homework tool used at UMass, may integrate after being tested in several courses this spring and could be available on campus by next fall, according to staff at the Office of Information Technology.

The integration will be helpful for campus not only because it will allow students to log into both tools together and not separately, but it will provide instructors with many useful upgrades.

Instructors using both SPARK and OWL will be able to “use each tool to do what it does best rather than settling for a less than ideal approach or having to build additional features into a tool that duplicates existing capabilities in the other,” according to OIT.

Specifically, instructors will be able to transfer OWL grades into the SPARK grade book, as well as transferring all grades into SPIRE by means of the current SPARK to SPIRE connection. Instructors using SPARK will also be able to add the advanced homework and questioning capabilities of OWL to the normal quizzing and surveying features found in SPARK without managing two rosters, and can rosters students into their OWL course and manage add/drops in their OWL enrollment.

The link, being tested in approximately 10 courses, will get an evaluation by both instructors and students, and OIT’s Academic Computing division and the Center for Educational Software Development will determine if the link should be available across campus in the fall.

Audrey Mae DeGroat of Middletown, a former employee of the Middletown Psychiatric Center and a lifelong resident of the area, died on Tuesday, January 24, 2012 in ORMC in Middletown. she was 91. the daughter of the late Seely and Ada Smith, she was born on May 3, 1920 in Middletown.

She was a member of St. John’s AME Zion Church in Middletown. she was the widow of Hanford DeGroat Sr.

Survivors include her children: Edward Corley and his wife, Rose Mary, Linda DeGroat, Donna DeGroat, Nadine Williams, and Marvin DeGroat, all of Middletown; her grandchildren: Brive Cossky, Marvin DeGroat Jr., Edward Corley Jr. and his wife, Ranaye, Robert Corley and his wife, Cathy, Renee Lewis and her husband, Nathaniel, Shyleen Williams, Ricky Williams, Larry DeGroat Jr., Hanford DeGroat, Donald DeGroat, and Jason DeGroat; her daughter-in-law, Vicki DeGroat and sisters-in-law, Ida Smith and Frances Smart. she is also survived by her great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews and cousins. she was predeceased by her sons: Larry DeGroat, Leslie DeGroat, Michael DeGroat and Donald DeGroat; her brother, Seely Smith Jr.; her grandchildren: May DeGroat, Donald DeGroat, Craig DeGroat, and Haley DeGroat and her daughterin-law, Helen.

Visitation hours will be held on Tuesday, January 31 from 10-11 a.m. with services at 11 a.m. at St. John’s AME Zion Church, Middletown, NY. Burial will be in Wallkill Cemetery, Phillipsburg, NY.

No sooner had the dust settled on the SOPA debate — a bad law the tech sector did a good job of torpedoing — than the nerdlingers were up in arms once again about copyright theft. But it’s not what you think.

On this occasion, the noise involves one group of coders in the US appropriating code from another group. Basically, Curebit which calls itself a “Social Referral Platform” was caught copying code and images from 37 Signals’ HighRise product. this of course is very, very bad. and not at all like, for instance, copying and republishing an investigative piece of journalism that took 10 people two months to put together because … because… because… Remind me again how these two things are different.

Apparently, information only wants to be free when it’s someone else’s work that is getting stolen. BTW, Grok cut and pasted the information about Curebit from another website, changed a few words, deleted a few more and passed it off as his own creation — All Hail the Internet.

Paul Carr, (whose work we misappropriated in that earlier paragraph) in PandoDaily, punctures the hypocrisy the outrage over Curebit’s conduct brings to the whole debate neatly in this piece.

Indeed it’s such a neat bit of writing that rather than attempting to improve upon it, we are just going to drop a big slab of it down on the page for you.

Carr wrote: “And yet when the victim isn’t a big evil Hollywood mogul (or one of the tens of thousands of people who work for him) but one of our own… well, then IP thieves should be dragged through the streets until they tearfully apologise. What’s the difference? is it, as some argued on Twitter when I asked the question earlier, that plagiarism is different from copyright theft? No. and not least because plagiarism is copyright theft. like most copyright theft, plagiarism doesn’t deprive the creator of their original work and is usually committed by someone who is too lazy or cheap to acquire or create something legally.” *

As he then pointed out, “The only real difference is that in plagiarism the infringer is usually pretending to be the creator of someone else’s work. But the right to be identified as the creator of the work is a so-called “moral right” which, in most jurisdictions (and under theBerne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works), is part and parcel of copyright.”

Privacy is the product, not the policy

Yesterday was international Data Privacy Day , but you already knew I was going to write that. Or at least Google did as it would have been abundantly clear from my recent search behaviour.

Coincidently, it was also the same day Google started emailing its customers about the rationalisation of its privacy policy, the same week Facebook chief operating officer, Sheryl Sandberg , said the Web was moving from anonymity to identification. and finally, for good measure, it has been about 10 years since Bill Gates dispatched his Trustworthy Computing memo to his evil minions. Thank Readwriteweb for that last observation.

This, all of which, is another way of saying we are currently in the middle of a big moment for user privacy. the cynical view is that the conversation is heading towards one of three conclusions: Users’ privacy rights will be trampled underfoot, users don’t particularly care anymore, or both of these.

There is another potential outcome which Grok thinks is also likely. Privacy is such a big and unpleasant problem that there’s a buck to be made by solving it and as this opinion piece by Keith Teare in Techcrunch suggests, customers will demand nothing less.

Teare pointed out in his piece that privacy, so long a policy issue for Web publishers, has now become a product issue.

Teare wrote: “Product managers now need to think long and hard about the assumptions built into their products and ensure they are serving consumers not just in words but in fact. Consumers are at a tipping pointy in not tolerating all-inclusive policy decisions by service providers that impact who sees their stuff.”

If Grok was a betting man, which he is, he’s wager is the problem won’t be solved by incumbents like Google and Facebook who are nowhere near as evil as you might imagine — they’re just compromised by circumstance.

Instead, some smart young kid with a point to prove will beat them to the punch, and to the bucket of gold that goes with it.

Which hat are they going to choose?

The staged suspense of highly recruited high school athletes choosing which college they will attend has been turned into television gold in recent years.

ESPN and just about any other network that carries games has gotten into the business of staging big press conferences in high school gymnasiums for the most high-profile athletes in the country.

Of course, they love to over-hype these kids who have yet to do anything. It’s all about potential. still, people watch because they’re hoping Joe Smith from Anytown, U.S.A. will be the next Tim Tebow and bring their college to prominence.

On the off chance that I’m in front of a television that’s tuned to one, I hope for something a little bit more awkward. something more on the level of what happened when ESPN’s no. 1-ranked safety, Landon Collins, committed on national television to Alabama. Mind you, he’s from close to Baton Rouge and chose the Crimson Tide over nearby LSU.

His mom chose to voice her disapproval, saying LSU was the no. 1 school in the country, and, “Go Tigers.”

While fans of the Football Bowl Subdivision are pouring over the latest recruiting reports from Scout.com and Rivals.com, there are thousands more signing stories that go unheralded and unreported. The glitz and glamor is for the sports that make money, but right here in Yamhill County, there are athletes that are preparing to make the jump to college athletics.

There are those — like Willamina’s Chelsea Moser in volleyball — who signed early, but on Wednesday, the main period for prospective student athletes in football, soccer, track, cross country, men’s water polo and field hockey opens so they can sign a national letter of intent. In the Church of College Football Recruiting, this holiest of holy days is still often called “National Signing Day,” but in reality, they have until Aug. 1 to decide.

Here in the county, McMinnville High School seniors Ariel Oliver and Dustin Munger will both sign letters of intent Wednesday. Munger told the News-Register last month he has chosen to play soccer at the University of Portland.

Oliver, who last spring set the Mac school record in the discus, has indicated she will throw for San Diego State in the spring of 2013. 

Mac Athletics Director Ben Patterson said the two seniors will be signing their forms in the high school library at 8 a.m. Wednesday.

“We’re excited when a kid decides to participate in collegiate athletics,” Mac track coach Vic down said, “and we’re even more excited when they officially sign. … It’s a rare opportunity.”

The Grizzlies’ track program has a couple of other college hopefuls as well. Downs said senior Ashante Horsley, a four-event juggernaut, is planning to visit the University of Oregon in the next couple of weeks. Also, senior Tim Anderson told Downs he’s firm on going to Western Washington University to run cross country and track next year.

The same day Oliver’s and Munger’s signing plans were announced, Dayton’s Athletics Director Todd Shirley said Dayton senior Hayden Craig would be making his decision official to play defensive end for Montana. Craig, who was recently named a U.S. Air Force All-America Second-Team tight end by MaxPreps.com, will sign his letter of intent Wednesday in the Dayton library.

Craig is also a member of the Pirates’ basketball team. Dayton coach Ron Hop acknowledged the wealth of talent. besides Craig, Dayton features 6-foot-10 Maika Ostling, who signed his letter of intent in November to play for Oregon State in the early signing period. 

The third cog in the loaded Dayton senior class is A.J. Hedgecock. Hop said Hedgecock is undecided and trying to narrow down what he wants to do. He’s a three-sport star who excels in football, basketball and track.

“I think his first love is basketball,” Hop said, “though I could see him do track. his skills would make him into a perfect decathlete.”

Hop said he’s always proud when one of his athletes has what it takes to play in college. 

“for most kids, their last high school game is their last. Period,” Hop said. “Signing their letter of intent is a big deal. … People want to rally behind that.”

Neptune return from space with a new lineup, album, and tour. next time, maybe they’ll bring you a personalized keychain.

I remember studying the solar system in elementary school, circa third or fourth grade, maybe. I remember the project — the one where we each chose a planet and researched the hell out of it, then painted a few Styrofoam balls and stuck them in a shadow box. something along those lines. Of course, for the sake of fairness (I suppose), we couldn’t choose our own planets. we had to draw slips of paper from a bowl. I drew Mars. Fuck Mars. It’s just close to Earth and was maybe at one point inhabitable. Lame.

Neptune’s rad, though. Homemade instruments, drum feedback, interrupted radio broadcasts and the like. I’m talking about the band, not the planet, in case you didn’t catch that abrupt subject switcheroo — but you never know, maybe they play electric collage songs out in space too. Since 1994, Neptune have worked with a variety of lineups — the latest includes Jason Sanford, mark Pearson, and Kevin Micka — and experimented with discarded materials and found noises to create a surreal sound, perhaps fast-forwarding to the year 2845. on March 13, they’ll release their 10th LP titled msg rcvd via Northern Spy Records. Just a regular release, nothing beamed down from space. They’re touring too, but it looks like they’ll be skipping extraterrestrial venues. Just zooming through Europe. Bummer.
