“All of our customers are primarily going to trade the Facebook IPO in the secondary market,” said Ahmed. “We’ll see lot of intraday trades; a lot of volatility. Customers will try to buy it at $65 and then jump out at $70 and then buy again if it goes back down.”

Wall Street’s biggest beneficiaries of Facebook’s arrival are the banks that lead the deal’s underwriting team like Morgan Stanley (US:MS), J.P. Morgan Securities (US:JPM), Goldman Sachs (US:GS) , Bank of America Merrill Lynch (US:BAC) and Barclays Capital (US:BCS).

Ron Etergino of theflyonthewall.com, an equity research firm, said Facebook will provide a “quick shot in the arm” for retail brokerages, but it probably won’t help reverse the long-term trend of weak volumes in equities, Etergino said.

“We believe the overwhelming fear of missing the next big tech stock will force everyone to get involved, more than the potential for short-term trading profits,” Etergino said.

John Fitzgibbon, analyst with IPOScoop.com and a former investment banker at Sanyo Securities in the 1980s and 1990s, said high-profile IPOs typically provide Wall Street with a nice lift.

“It turns the light on in a dark room,” Fitzgibbon said. “It draws attention to the deal and the marketplace. People follow along and then look to the next deal.”

Daily average revenue trades for online brokers fell about 11% in the first quarter verses the year-ago period, when rising stock prices accompanied an overall increase in trading volume, according to Rich Repetto, an analyst at Sandler O’Neill who covers retail brokerages such as Ameritrade Holding Corp. (US:AMTD)

Yahoo

Yahoo inc. said in may 2012 that its new chief executive, Scott Thompson, didn’t earn a degree in computer science as stated in a recent securities filing, citing an “inadvertent error” without providing further explanation. The admission came after an activist shareholder, hedge fund Third Point LLC, pointed out the discrepancy. Yahoo’s website stated mr. Thompson had received a bachelor’s degree in accounting and computer science from Stonehill College. Yahoo later said mr. Thompson received a bachelor of science degree in business administration with a major in accounting from Stonehill. The fund, run by activist investor Daniel Loeb, called for mr. Thompson’s immediate termination.

RadioShack

In 2006, RadioShack Corp. Chief Executive David Edmondson resigned by “mutual agreement” after he admitted inflating his educational background. mr. Edmondson acknowledged misstating his educational credentials from Pacific Coast Baptist College in California, saying he believed he received a ThG diploma—typically a certificate with fewer requirements than a bachelor’s degree—and not a bachelor of science degree as he previously claimed. But the CEO also acknowledged he couldn’t document the ThG diploma. mr. Edmondson said in a statement at the time: “The board and I have agreed that it is in the best interest of the company for new leadership to step forward.”

Eye-care company Bausch & Lomb in 2002 rescinded a bonus for CEO Ronald Zarrella after learning his biography incorrectly claimed he had an M.B.a. from new York University. “I am fully responsible for the misrepresentation in my official biography, an error that has been repeated elsewhere,” mr. Zarrella wrote in a letter to the board, adding: “There is simply no adequate excuse for a misrepresentation of this kind, and thus I offer none.” He offered to resign; the board didn’t accept his resignation. He retired in March 2008.

When Heather Bresch was promoted to chief operating officer in 2007, the company said she had an M.B.a. from West Virginia University. Ms. Bresch had studied at the school but hadn’t completed her degree, an independent panel later concluded. after receiving questions from the media, the university retroactively awarded Ms. Bresch an M.B.a.—which, after further contention, it moved to revoke. in an emailed statement in 2008, she said, “I continue to believe that I did what I needed to do to earn my degree. The administration allowed me to take an unconventional approach as part of what was then a program in its infancy.” Ms. Bresch is now the generic-drug maker’s chief executive.

Gregory Probert, the president and chief operating officer of Herbalife Ltd., resigned in 2008 after he was caught embellishing his academic credentials by fraud investigator. Herbalife, a Los Angeles marketer of weight-loss products, had said mr. Probert received an M.B.a. from California State University, Los Angeles. it mentioned the degree in at least 19 regulatory filings. But mr. Probert never finished Cal State’s M.B.a. program, where he took classes in the early 1980s, the university said. mr. Probert said he nearly completed an M.B.a. at Cal State, but “the truth is that my vanity prevailed and I did not take action” to correct Herbalife’s biography.

MGM Mirage

J. Terrence Lanni, the chairman and CEO of MGM Mirage inc., retired from the gambling company in 2008 shortly after questions surfaced about his academic background. mr. Lanni claimed to have an M.B.a. from the University of Southern California, but the school later said that, while he had earned a bachelor of science degree, there was no M.B.a. on record. When questioned about the discrepancy, mr. Lanni said he had received an honorary M.B.a. from the university in 1992. USC denied the claim. mr. Lanni said at the time that his decision to retire had nothing to do with the allegations.

In 2009, railroad operator CSX Corp. levied a “substantial financial penalty” on its chief commercial officer, Clarence Gooden, after discovering that he had misrepresented his academic background in a corporate biography. mr. Gooden claimed he had earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Georgia in the 1970s. As he later admitted, he attended the school for several years but never completed the degree. The executive released a statement at the time apologizing to employees: “I want you to know that I take full responsibility and hope that you will accept my sincere apology.”

In 2002, the chief financial officer of Veritas Software Corp., Kenneth E. Lonchar, resigned after directors learned he had lied about having an M.B.a. from Stanford University. a Veritas biography said mr. Lonchar received a bachelor of arts degree in accounting from Arizona State University. a university spokeswoman had said it could find no record that he was a student there. in a written statement at the time, mr. Lonchar said he regretted misstating his educational background. “Under the circumstances, I believe my resignation is in the best interests of both the company and myself,” he said.

James Peterson, the president and CEO of Microsemi Corp., an Irvine, Calif.-based semiconductor maker, kept his job but paid a $100,000 fine in 2009 and gave up his bonus that year after the company learned that he had attended classes at Brigham Young University, but was never awarded the bachelor’s and M.B.a. degrees that he had previously listed as credentials. after conducting a review, Microsemi said its board “concluded that the interests of Microsemi’s shareholders are best served by retaining mr. Peterson while imposing appropriate financial penalties and remedial actions.” The board also adopted an ethics policy that, among other things, mandated background checks for directors and high-ranking executives. “I have respected the board’s process from the start, and I accept the results of that process,” mr. Peterson said in a company statement at the time.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology

In 2007, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology dismissed its longtime dean of admissions, Marilee Jones, after the university received an anonymous tip that she had embellished her own credentials. She attended college for one year, as a part-time student at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1974, but never received the bachelor’s or master’s degrees that she claimed from RPI. Nor did she receive a degree she claimed from Albany Medical College, the university found. in a statement released by the university, Ms. Jones said she first fudged her résumé in 1979 when she was hired in a junior position in the MIT admissions office. When she was promoted to the deanship in 1997, she “didn’t have the courage to correct my résumé,” she wrote.

R.H. Donnelley

In 2006, telephone-directory publisher R.H. Donnelley Corp. said that its chairman and chief executive never graduated from the Minnesota university he attended. David Swanson attended St. Cloud State University in Minnesota from 1973 to 1976 but didn’t earn a degree. R.H. Donnelley had twice issued news releases stating that he had. The company said the detail had never appeared in any document filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission or the new York Stock Exchange. it said mr. Swanson didn’t claim to be a graduate of St. Cloud State when he was hired. “This is a regrettable situation for which I accept full responsibility,” said mr. Swanson at the time.

James Minder resigned shortly after being named chairman of gun maker Smith & Wesson Holding Corp. in 2004 when it was learned that he had spent time in prison in the 1950s and ’60s for an armed-robbery spree and an attempted prison escape. mr. Sandra Baldwin resigned in 2002 as president of the U.S. Olympic Committee after admitting she hadn’t received an undergraduate degree from the University of Colorado in 1962 and a doctorate from Arizona State in 1967. She did attend Colorado in 1958-1959 without graduating and earned a bachelor’s degree from Arizona State in 1962. She said she completed the course work for a doctorate but didn’t finish her dissertation.

University of Notre Dame

In 2001, George O’Leary resigned as Notre Dame football coach five days after being hired, admitting inaccuracies in his academic and athletic background. mr. O’Leary claimed to have a master’s degree in education and to have played college football for three years, but checks into his background showed it wasn’t true.

Sunbeam

“Chainsaw” Al Dunlap, ousted by Sunbeam in 1998 amid allegations of accounting irregularities, was later discovered to have been terminated by Max Phillips & Son after seven weeks in 1973 and by Nitec Paper Corp. in 1976 after two years as president, according to his lawyer. The two major search firms checking his employment history never uncovered those dismissals.

Scott Rolen is healthy.

“Unbelievably, yes,” he said. “I am.”

Rolen, who is coming off his fourth surgery on his left shoulder, went 1-for-4 Tuesday night in the Reds’ 2-1 loss in 10 innings to the St. Louis Cardinals. The hit raised his average to .135.

The shoulder isn’t the issue.

“He looks healthy,” Baker said. “He was healthy when we left spring training. he hasn’t done anything not to be healthy. He’s just getting off to a slow start. It’s all over baseball — slow starts. when he left spring training, he was swinging good.”

Sunday was one rough game for Rolen. Washington walked Joey Votto to get to Rolen with the bases loaded twice. Rolen struck out each time.

“The frustrating thing about that was you get into a spot that calls for putting on a good, quality at-bat,” he said, “and you turn in two fairly uncompetitive at-bats. That’s the frustrating part.

“I don’t necessarily believe in the big at-bat or whatever. But as the game goes through and you get to (the) plate in the seventh, eighth, ninth inning, you’ve got to be sure if you have a best at-bat you want it to be that one. obviously, that wasn’t what I wanted.”

–INF Miguel Cairo was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring. he injured it sliding into home Saturday.

–INF/OF Todd Frazier was called up from Triple-A Louisville to take INF Miguel Cairo’s spot on the roster. Frazier, who can play third, first, left or right, was hitting .231 at Louisville. he had hit in five straight games before the call up. Frazier was the last player cut before Opening Day. he hit .291 during spring training and led the Reds with five home runs and 15 RBI.

–RHP Jordan Smith (elbow) was re-instated from the 15-day disabled list and optioned to Triple-A. Smith was injured early in spring. he had been rehabbing at the Reds facility in Goodyear, Ariz.

–RHP Nick Masset tried to resume throwing last week but had to shut down after feeling tenderness in his shoulder. Masset, who’s been on the disabled list all year, will get back on strengthening program.

–RF Jay Bruce went 0-for-4 Tuesday night to extend his hitless streak to a career-high 0-for-18. Bruce’s average is down to .186.

The latest update of the official New York Fed staff economic forecasts predicts trend-like growth, largely stable inflation and a slow grind lower in the unemployment rate.

The Federal Reserve Bank of New York released its May forecasts Friday to its Economic Advisory Panel. in a release that laid out the data, bank economists said the predictions help prepare William Dudley, the New York Fed leader, to participate in monetary policy setting Federal Open Market Committee meetings.

Bank economists see “moderate” growth of around 2.5% this year, with activity picking up to 3% next year. The forecasters allowed that activity at the end of last year and the start of this year may have been goosed up by warm winter weather and auto inventory adjustments, but they nonetheless reckon “some of the headwinds that have hampered growth in recent years” will subside “gradually.” They said that will allow “improved fundamentals to become more apparent in the second half of the year.”

The big challenge for next year is the expected “significant drag” presented by government spending cutbacks, but improved job market and financial conditions will go some way toward offsetting that influence, the bank said.

Meanwhile, what is now an 8.1% unemployment rate is seen grinding down to an average of 7.2% in the final quarter of 2013. on the inflation front, the bank predicts reduced pressure from energy markets will allow inflation to “slow notably” to just over 2% this year. The Fed’s official target is for 2% inflation.

The staff forecast acknowledges the current environment is “very uncertain.” They added “the staff sees the balance of risks to real economic activity as being skewed to the downside.” among the potential negatives: Europe’s debt crisis, U.S. government spending cutbacks, and oil price developments.

Denver mayoral candidate Doug Linkhart, dropped his ballot Friday and said it is his specificity on positions that matter most to Denver voters.

Linkhart, who issued a release early Friday stating that a poll produced three weeks ago showing he was not in the top three candidates was inaccurate, said his name on the top of the ballot and considerable city-wide leadership experience would win him the election.

“everywhere I go, I have been more specific about what I am going to do,” Linkhart told the Colorado Independent. “[I'm] not just giving generalities or acting like I am going to fix the school district which we can’t do anyhow. I think we can help the schools and help the kids.”

Linkhart said it was the details that mattered to Denver voters. He said some of the specifics have been his plan to add composting to recycling, opening libraries for longer hours, making recreation centers free for kids and fixing what many voters see as a broken police department.

Getting specific, Linkhart said that implementing his composting and recycling program would be supported and enhanced by beginning to charge citizens for garbage pickup.

“Denver is 41st in the country of major cities on recycling–not very good,” Linkhart said.”

Commenting on what many observes have noticed as a lack of voter interest in the race, Linkhart said he hoped that the citizenry would take a moment to make a decision on their futures.

“So many people are not voting to date, I am worried that we are not going to see enough folks vote,” Linkhart said.

Linkhart is one of the top candidates in a race that appears to be largely between Linkhart, James Mejia, former state Senator Chris Romer, and former City Council President Michael Hancock.

The election to determine which two candidates make the run-off will be over Tuesday, may 3. if one candidates scores 50 percent plus one vote, the election itself will be decided Tuesday.

Let’s talk this week about two of the greatest words in the English language, at least when it comes to things that happen at a ballpark. “Free pizza” is pretty good. “Home run” would be a natural choice. if you’re a Gastonia Grizzlies fan, “Garbage nachos” could even make the cut.

But they all pale in comparison to “Beer Fest.”

The Grizzlies will host their 2012 Beer Fest from 6 to 10 p.m. may 12 at Sims Legion Ballpark at 1001 N. Marietta St. For the insanely low price of $25 ($40 if you want the VIP ticket), you’ll get unlimited sampling of more than 125 beers from local and national breweries of all stripes, from classics like Newcastle Brown Ale and Leinenkugel’s to lesser-known regional makers like Oskar Blues and Kona Brewing.

Local beers, of course, are the stars of the show. This year, the Noda Brewing Company joins Olde Mecklenburg Brewery, Olde Hickory Brewery, Mother Earth Brewing and many others to show what Carolinians will do with barley and hops when left to their own devices.

But let’s talk a bit about how to go about attending a beer fest. those of you who have not attended in the past might be a bit intimidated by the thought of dozens of beers in one spot, any of which can be had at will.

First off, be sure you get your ticket! the fest has sold out the last two years, so go to Gastoniagrizzlies.com and get yours soon.

Second: Pace yourself! You’ve got three or four hours (depending on your ticket) to roam and explore. if you rush in and pound down 10 or 12 samples in the first half hour, you’ll be in no condition to enjoy the rest of the party. Caleb Davis is playing, and he’s one of the best in the area. You want to be coherent enough to enjoy.

Third: Eat something! Along with the usual ballpark food, you’ll be able to get the Grizzlies’ own Garbage Nachos, Donut Dogs and Donut Burgers along with a top-secret new item for this year’s season. I’m not going to tell you what it is until after the fest, so you’d better go see for yourself. It sounds pretty good to me.

Fourth: Get outside your comfort zone! now, I’m not talking about seating here. There’s plenty of that, and you’re also welcome to bring along your own camp chair if you, like me, tend to be a bit hard on plastic chairs. I’m talking about the beer. This is the perfect time to try a porter, stout, IPA, witbier or any other variety that has never crossed your lips before. You can find a new favorite (or non-favorite) without springing for a six-pack or a pint at the pub. and you can find types of beer you already like made by different brewers. I plan to set up my chair next to the Shiner table and explore from there.

Finally, and most importantly, folks: Designate a driver. there are cheap tickets for designated drivers that will get them in for the band and the good times, or you can always make use of a taxi. While we’d all like to believe we can moderate our pace and enjoy ourselves without going over the line, it is certainly possible to do otherwise. be prepared!

With 674 voters taking advantage of early One stop voting in Pamlico County, the early local race leaders include Pat Prescott for the District 1 county commissioner seat; Kris Ward in the District 5 school board seat; and Mackie Spruill in the District 2 school board race.

Pamlico County resident Norman Sanderson had a big early lead in the N.C. District 2 Senate race, 230 to 71 for Randy Ramsey of Carteret County.

Prescott, the Grantsboro town clerk, doubled the total of challenger Lance Hamby, a produce manager, 24-12. Both are Democrat newcomers.

Ward, who works for a law firm and is a former substitute, had an early 72-56 lead over 16-year incumbent John McCotter.

Spruill, a former Pamlico County High teacher, has a big early lead, 185-62, over retired Oriental businessman Charles MacIntyre.

In some early state races, Walter Dalton had 165 votes to 67 for Bob Etheridge in the Democratic governor’s primary, which featured six candidates.

Pat McCrory of Charlotte had 82 percent of the vote in the Republican governor’s race, ahead of Scott Jones, with 31.

Mitt Romney had a 230 to 31 advantage over Newt Gingrich in the Republican presidential primary. President Barack Obama was unchallenged, with 208 votes, although 65 votes checked the no preference choice.

The results were released when the polls closed at 7:30 p.m.

Floyd Mayweather Jr added the WBA Super World light-middleweight title to his supreme career roster with a battling unanimous points victory over Miguel Cotto.

Mayweather, fighting at the 154lbs limit for the first time since defeating Oscar de La Hoya to win the WBC belt exactly five years ago, won favour by margins of 118-110 and 117-111 (twice) on the judges’ scorecards to preserve his unblemished 43-fight record.

Defending champion Cotto, unbeaten in his previous three bouts at light-middleweight, enjoyed moments of success with brutal spells of inside pressure, but slips to 37 wins and three defeats as a a professional.

Attentions will once again turn towards the prospect pairing Mayweather with pound-for-pound rival Manny Pacquiao, but the 35-year-old American must first serve a three-month prison sentence after pleading guilty to a domestic violence charge.

Mayweather’s crisp left jab was the defining feature of the opening round, while the challenger showed he was willing to trade at close quarters as Cotto increased the pace and physicality of the contest in two.

Cotto landed a meaty left hook in five as he relentlessly burrowed forward and the 31-year-old Puerto Rican enjoyed his best three minutes to date in round six, drawing blood from the nose of his opponent who appeared to be feeling the relentless pace.

An absorbing ebb and flow continued across the subsequent two sessions, as Mayweather’s slick backfoot work gave way to another dose of Cotto’s frenetic pressure.

The champion managed to impose his style down the stretch, regularly pulling Mayweather out of his comfort zone and into the trenches.

But Mayweather’s dazzling defensive and counter-punching skills came to the fore in the final two rounds, as he sealed an eighth world title across five weight divisions.

Speaking to US broadcaster HBO after the fight, Mayweather stated his desire to face Pacquiao next and suggested the bout might have already taken place but for the presence of the Filipino’s promoter, Bob Arum.

“This fight right here, I was looking to fight Manny Pacquiao,” he said.

“The fight didn’t happen, I don’t think the fight could happen because of Bob Arum.

“Bob Arum was in the way – he stopped the Pacquiao fight.

“Let’s give the fans what they want to see. They want to see Mayweather-Pacquiao.”

Also, try “Huevos con Nopales” (loosely traduced into eggs and cactus) pretty effective at killing “la cruda” as it mixes sour and spicy. if those don’t work, don’t be afraid to step into a Michelada (the Mexican version of the bloody mary).

For those who weren’t chasing Mexican werewolfves during Supermoon Cinco de Mayo night, Super Bowl-winning new York Giants QB Eli Manning hosted Saturday Night Live last night with musical guest Rihanna. who needs Tim Tebow and Kate Upton indeed?

• Justin Bieber and 50 Cent Bromance:

Former foes 50 Cent and Justin Bieber joined forces last night as part of boxing champ Floyd Mayweather Jr’s entourage as they accompanied Lil Wayne and wrestler HHH in an epic entrance to the MGM Grand Casino in Las Vegas where Mayweather Jr. successfully defended his welterweight title against Miguel Cotto.
